Hey you,
I was involved in a group discussion last night with a bunch of amazing women, where we were expressing our thoughts and feelings about the book Rest is Resistance by Tricia Hersey.
It’s such an eyeopening, provocative read, have you read it? What did you think?
If you haven’t, I’d really recommend it for its radical, but necessary look at rest and its role in a healthy life. It is one of those books that will really change the way you see the world. The ‘rest’ that Tricia writes about is not just resting and napping for the sake of it, more that rest is an active decision, a form of resistance against the toxic urgency of modern day life and its ‘grind culture’ where productivity is all and we are all caught up in the endless hamster wheel of capitalism and the goal of ‘more’ rather than ‘enough’.
Rest is the portal to new ways of being and thinking, but we have to be bold enough and courageous enough to commit to rest in all its forms in a world that wants us to do anything but.
One of the ways we can rest is to daydream, which is discussed a lot in the book, especially in the chapter IMAGINE! which is what we were focusing on.
As we chatted through our thoughts, we discussed when, how and if we daydreamed.
It was a real eye opener for some of us including myself, who struggled with the idea of daydreaming and realised that it’s not something we actively make time for at all.
In the book, Tricia asks us to imagine daydreaming for just 10 minutes a day, not even 1% of the time that we have available, and embarrassingly it wasn’t something many of us were actively embracing as a self care tool, an act of resistance against the pace of life. Yikes.
What I DID realised through the discussion was that one of the ways that I definitely DO daydream is through journaling.
Not all of my journaling could be classed as daydreaming, and I did wonder about the different between daydreaming and strategising as many of my business and content ideas are revealed to me during my morning journaling, but I do think journaling about my thoughts and ideas leads me quite often to a state of daydreaming and imagining ‘what if?’
How about you? How conscious are you of your daydreaming? Does it come naturally to you, or is your head too full off stuff and busy-ness? What are your dreams for the rest of the year? Do let me know in the comments what your thought are around daydreaming…
Let’s daydream together
My monthly journaling session is coming up this Sunday at 7pm UK time. This is especially for my members and this time we will be doing some journaling and dreaming about autumn and what lies ahead.
If you’re a member, the link is at the bottom, if you’re not, you can always upgrade to take part, you’d be very welcome. It’s a bank holiday weekend here in the UK so it will no doubt be a small, intimate affair!
We gather at 7pm on zoom and I’ll talk you through the theme and the exercises. We then journal together, usually in 2-3 short bursts around prompts and we will be finished at 8pm. It’s a friendly affair, there’s no pressure to share anything you don’t want to.
But it’s a lovely way to spend an hour and who knows where the daydream will take you?
As we start to transition from summer in the UK into autumn, let me take you on a journey in your journal…
With love,
