Great reminder and perspective! Principles in general are more useful to guide our behaviours.

Reading the paths of others is still helpful for idea generation or inspiration. Because sometimes it’s hard to know what to do when you have no idea what’s possible. But I 100% agree with the missing context and small things we can’t garner from someone telling us their story.

I love being inspired by people’s stories, struggles and triumphs too - it’s the stuff of life!

Indeed, haha! I’m onboard with the core idea of your post though. I’ve sometimes felt frustrated trying exactly what someone else was recommending. Because often it won’t work for my exact situation, but nowadays I recognize that the general direction might work but I need to apply it to my specific situation.

Such good thoughts and reminders for thinking about being a creative/writer, Sarah! The key for me is to always remember to simply be true to myself in everything I do. To remember that all of our unique and amazing voices are needed. ❤️

yes! the secret sauce as Lindsay says below, is just YOU but we always want to make it something else as we can't quite believe that that's enough

It's so interesting that what, I think, the secret sauce ends up being is simply living in and celebrating your most authentic self. But though this may sound facile, it's so very hard to achieve. We all want to be successful (however that term is interpreted) but it's only possible to take the necessary steps like being willing to try and fail if our sense of self is solid, isn't it? Thanks so much for this, Sarah. An inspiring early read for me today, and it's delightful to see how important your coaching is in enabling women to achieve their goals.

it is all about our sense of self and understanding that we are unique and have our own path to follow, our own version of successful

Such a great post. I am a chronic people pleaser and terrible at setting boundaries. You've reminded me to work on that. In my experience, and something I'm ever wondrous of, people who are successful protect their privacy. They are good at creating a sense of authenticity, but with boundaries. I fall into the trap that everything I do must be on show, I think because my writing career is based around explorations of personal events - grief, mainly. Because I talk openly about my experiences, I then find it hard to set boundaries around some of those experiences. People who are successful, like you say, put themselves first. Such a helpful post. Thank you!

great post!! sometimes it really is all about right place, right time -- but being intrinsically motivated by your own passion and unwavering belief in yourself can get you far too :)

I think the most content people in my life are adaptable, disciplined and resilient. They’re also continuous learners. I’m thinking of one of my brothers, in particular. A touch of imagination helps too!
